First Service
After a year of prayer meetings, vision-casting moments, meals with prospective members, and outreaches in the community, we held our first Sunday morning service as a new church plant on January 2, 2022. We had the perfect temporary venue, a movie theatre, Miracle Theatre, one block from what will be our permanent location in Washington, D.C. Our team worked hard leading up to that Sunday and was well-prepared for the moment. The faith and excitement were palpable. Only one thing was missing from Grace Covenant Church Capitol Hill's first service... the senior pastor.
Having contracted COVID a few days earlier, my family and I watched the inaugural service on Zoom from our home. After just one Sunday, I had secured my place in church planting lore. I'm officially the pastor who missed his church's first service.
While watching the service online, I witnessed our team rise to new levels of leadership. Guests were warmly welcomed. Worship songs were richly offered to God. Coffee and doughnuts were hospitably served. The founding pastor of our sending church, Mark Caulk, preached a powerful, faith-filled sermon.
I was struck by one simple fact; I wasn't needed that Sunday for a God-glorifying worship service.
God's Promises
While Christ attends to the building and longevity of his church, he also sustains each of our lives individually. In a time when many like our family are contracting COVID, remember his promises to sustain you.
Since before you were born, God has cared for you (Psalm 71:6). You woke up today by God who sustains you (Psalm 3:5). He will keep you till the day you see Jesus (1 Cor 1:8). He's strong enough to shoulder your burdens (Psalm 55:22). His promises assure that you will live (Psalm 119:116).
I missed Grace Covenant Church Capitol Hill's first service. From my couch God was teaching me that both my family's health and this new church are utterly dependent on Him. While he loves to include me, He doesn't have to. His church will outlive me and His power is beyond me. He will build his church and attend to my life by his sustaining power.
